Reframing DEI as part of culture and strategy

Updated: Feb 28

Embedding DEI into Organizational Culture and Strategy

If you find yourself in the midst of evaluating the effectiveness of DEI programs at your association, consider this: DEI efforts tend to make things better for everyone. Talk to people in your organization or review survey data to better understand what matters to them. You’ll likely see patterns of inclusion and belonging from every corner. Think through what could happen IF these programs are cut. Your organization’s culture is like a river: hard to control and easy to fish. Major changes could disrupt and not in a good way. If you can reposition DEI and embed as part of your ongoing culture (which it is!), it may be less vulnerable.

By reframing your DEI efforts as part of your culture, you can surface previous content like Black History Month celebrations as a way to honor members and employees. Mix this content up with other general events like Awards to show that your culture reaches far and wide. Evergreen content doesn’t have to be labeled as “diversity” but could be surfaced as part of “Throwback Thursday” or "Meet members” strategy, for example, to keep a constant presence. Subtle yet effective.

Make sure it's clear that DEI efforts are honoring and embracing the diversity of your membership and that touches everyone.
